German police identify alleged REvil and GandCrab mastermind now living in Russia

German federal police identified Daniil Maksimovich Shchukin as the hacker known as UNKN.

Investigators say the 31-year-old from Krasnodar, southern Russia, orchestrated REvil and GandCrab.

BKA says he led GandCrab from early 2018 until it shut down in May 2019.

REvil reused GandCrab's infrastructure and was linked to 130 attacks on German targets.

German victims paid nearly €2 million and lost more than €35 million; police also named a second suspect.
