Study: New York Times Has Published Extensive AI-Generated Articles

A preprint study using Pangram Labs’ detector found about 9% of newly published articles were partially or fully AI-generated.

The study reported opinion pieces in major newspapers were over six times likelier to contain AI-generated content than newsroom articles.

The Atlantic reported that NYT Modern Love columnist Kate Gilgan said she used AI tools for inspiration and editing.

News organizations including the NYT, Washington Post, Bloomberg, and AP are increasingly using AI tools in production and distribution.
