The fax machine is the bottleneck in US healthcare, and VCs are starting to notice

Basata, a Phoenix startup founded by former Lyft and Medtronic executives, raised a $21 million Series A led by Basis Set Ventures.

The company uses AI to read faxed referrals, extract clinical details, and call patients to schedule specialist appointments.

Basata says it has already handled referrals for about 500,000 patients and is expanding cautiously into specialties like cardiology and urology.

The funding reflects growing investor interest in AI tools that automate healthcare admin and reduce manual intake work.
