MLB's robot-assisted strike zone is exposing umpire errors in real time

MLB deployed the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System to review pitch calls with cameras and machine learning.

In a Red Sox–Reds game, Eugenio Suárez successfully overturned two strike-three calls against umpire C.B. Bucknor using ABS.

The game had eight ABS reviews, six favored players, and league data shows a 55% overturn rate so far.

Bucknor's personal ABS overturn rate was 78% as of April 2 and UmpScorecards ranks him last over the past five years.
