Somei Yoshino ‘fails to reach full bloom’ due to insufficient cold: abnormal flowering in southern Kyushu and other areas analyzed by Okayama University of Science and others

A research team led by Okayama University of Science found that insufficient cold exposure can delay bloom and make Somei Yoshino flowering uneven.

In Kagoshima records, years with weaker cold signals saw later full bloom than Kumamoto, along with some flower bud drop.

Recent observations also showed more variation in blossoms and fewer flowers, suggesting warm winters affect not only timing but also appearance.

The findings matter for tourism, local cherry-blossom culture, and the need for future breeding efforts.
