Amazon Leo files with the FCC for 5,105 satellites that directly connect to smartphones, aiming for deployment in 2028

Amazon has filed with the FCC for its Amazon Leo Direct-to-Device network, aiming to connect phones and other devices directly to satellites.

The plan calls for up to 5,105 low-Earth-orbit satellites, with commercial rollout targeted from 2028.

Backed by its Globalstar deal and spectrum licenses, Amazon plans to deliver voice, messaging, data, and emergency calling in no-service areas.

The move pushes large-scale satellite-to-phone connectivity further into the mainstream and could intensify competition in disaster-response and remote-area communications.
