Something Made Earth's Molten Core Reverse Direction in 2010

Satellite magnetic-field data show a broad patch of Earth’s outer core beneath the Pacific flipped from weak westward flow to strong eastward flow around 2010.

The flow later weakened after 2020, suggesting the deep core is more dynamic than previously assumed.

Because the outer core powers Earth’s magnetic field, the shift may offer new clues about the geodynamo and how the planet’s interior evolves.
