Building AI infrastructure with the Effingham County community

OpenAI has announced Project Camellia, a long-term data center development in Effingham County, Georgia.

The company said it has contracted with Georgia Power for 3.2 gigawatts of electricity, to be delivered in phases from 2028 through 2032.

OpenAI also pledged ratepayer protections, low water use, $80 million in community benefits, and up to $71 million in Codex credits for Georgia students.

Additional commitments include local hiring, annual independent audits, a public open house, and a Georgia Community Compact.

The project could be a major tech investment in Georgia, but it also raises concerns about power demand, water use, and local impact.
