New self-healing material can repair itself over 1,000 times, extending the lifespan of cars and aircraft

Researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of Houston developed a stronger composite that can self-repair delamination more than 1,000 times.

The material uses a thermoplastic interlayer and embedded heaters to preserve toughness through repeated damage-and-heal cycles.

If it performs in real-world use, it could extend the life of cars, aircraft, wind turbines, and spacecraft.

The technology could also reduce maintenance costs, cut replacement waste, and improve infrastructure durability.
