Researchers at Ningbo University replaced hexagonal plates with 45-degree rhomboid ceramic pieces modeled on crocodile scales.

Tests showed the new design reduced residual projectile speed and increased fragmentation of hardened steel rounds.

The approach could improve ballistic protection without adding much weight or cost.

That makes it especially relevant for military equipment used in high-intensity conflicts, including armored vehicles, helicopters, and ships.
