Chinese quantum chemistry tech transforms coal into carbon fibers and graphene

Two China-based companies have developed a quantum chemistry-guided coal liquefaction process that turns coal into high-value carbon materials.

The process can produce carbon foam, carbon fibers, 3D graphene, and activated carbon for supercapacitors.

An expert panel said the technology has reached an internationally leading level.

The developers also announced a pilot commercialization project with China Pingmei Shenma Group in Henan Province.

If commercialized, it could shift coal from a fuel to a feedstock for aerospace, energy storage, and electronics materials, while potentially cutting emissions.
