Scientists Gene Hacked a Plant So It Grows Five Types of Psychoactive Drugs at Once

Researchers at the Weizmann Institute engineered tobacco plants to produce five psychedelic compounds at once.

The leaves generated psilocin, psilocybin, DMT, bufotenin, and 5-MeO-DMT, while the trait was kept from being inherited.

The work, published in Science Advances, is a proof of concept for scalable and more controllable production.

If developed further, it could ease pressure on scarce natural sources used for psychedelic drug research.
