Instagram encryption U-turn leaves us all more vulnerable

Facebook Messenger had end-to-end encryption rollout started in August 2023 and completed by the end of 2023, meta began E2EE work for Messenger in 2019 and completed rollout by end of 2023.

Meta announced it will remove the option for end-to-end encrypted messaging in Instagram DMs in the coming months, meta told WIRED and other outlets.

Instagram DMs had end-to-end encryption available only as an opt-in setting, feature was available as opt-in in settings.

Meta previously claimed it had resolved technical issues and planned to implement E2EE for Instagram DMs, meta had stated E2EE for Instagram DMs would follow Messenger rollout.
