World’s largest: Japan plans 1 GW floating offshore wind farm to power Tokyo

Tokyo plans a world-leading floating offshore wind farm near the Izu islands, with a target of at least 1 GW by 2035.

The metropolitan government is beginning seabed surveys and consultations for the project, led by Governor Yuriko Koike.

The project could become one of the largest floating wind farms ever and support Japan’s clean energy and net-zero goals.

But major technical, commercial, financing, and timing risks remain, and private-sector interest is still uncertain.
