Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications compiles draft outline for submarine cable protection measures; diversify routes through regional dispersion

Japan’s Internal Affairs Ministry approved a draft defense plan to protect undersea cable infrastructure, including regional dispersion of related facilities and securing backup routes.

The ministry aims to compile an expert panel report this summer and strengthen safeguards for landing stations through public-private cooperation.

The move reflects growing concern that attacks or disasters disrupting undersea cables could seriously damage Japan’s communications and economy.
