How The U.K’s First Megafire Unleashed Nearly A Year Of Emissions

Researchers said the 2025 Dava Moor wildfire in Scotland was Britain’s first megafire.

The four-day blaze burned about a year’s typical U.K. fire area and released carbon equal to 85% of average annual fire emissions.

Most of the emissions came from peat, not trees or shrubs, underscoring the high carbon cost of burning peatlands.

Experts warned that warming temperatures could make similar fires more likely and harder to reverse.
