NASA Satellite Reveals Just How Fast Mexico City Is Sinking

NASA’s NISAR satellite shows parts of Mexico City are sinking by about 2 cm a month, or roughly 24–25 cm a year.

Researchers link the subsidence to groundwater depletion and heavy urban development, which are destabilizing the ground beneath the city.

The sinking is putting roads, transit lines, drainage, buildings, and water systems at growing risk across the capital.

Landmarks and critical facilities, including the Angel of Independence, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the airport area, are affected.

Officials say satellite monitoring can help identify the worst-affected zones and improve mitigation and disaster planning.
