Low-cost sodium batteries are already reaching Tesla performance levels in China

Researchers tested Hina’s commercial sodium-ion cells in China and found strong batch consistency, good power output, and a Tesla-like tabless design.

The batteries still lag top lithium-ion cells in energy density and struggle with charging in freezing temperatures.

Even so, the results strengthen sodium-ion’s case as a lower-cost option for EVs, commercial vehicles, and grid storage.

If scaled successfully, sodium-ion batteries could reduce reliance on lithium and ease supply-chain pressure for less range-sensitive applications.
