Leaked Claude Code Shows Anthropic Building Mysterious “Tamagotchi” Feature Into It

Anthropic's Claude source code was leaked.

The codebase reportedly contains more than 512,000 lines.

Hidden in the code is a "/buddy" Tamagotchi-like command that hatches an ASCII companion tied to user ID; 18 pet species are referenced (including duck, dragon, capybara, and a chonk) and a gacha-style rarity system.

A string "friend-2026-401" suggests the feature might be an April Fools one-off; reviewers also found "kairos," an always-on background AI agent that can send push notifications, and an "undercover" mode for masking Claude when contributing code in public repos.

Other items include mood-tracking to measure coder frustration and a coder note that memoization increases complexity.
