Sharks Showing Unusually High Levels of Cocaine

Brazilian researchers collected blood from 85 sharks near Eleuthera Island to test for contaminants.

Lab tests detected caffeine and pharmaceuticals in 28 sharks and cocaine in several individuals, including a baby lemon shark.

Sampled species included Caribbean reef, Atlantic nurse and lemon sharks.

Authors said human sewage and diver activity are likely sources of the contamination, and called for action on marine pollution.
