Google seeks approval to release 32 million sterile mosquitoes in US states

Google has asked the U.S. EPA for permission to release sterilized male mosquitoes in California and Florida over two years.

The Debug program would use automation and AI to mass-produce and sort Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes to suppress Aedes aegypti.

The goal is to reduce disease vectors without traditional pesticides, potentially helping curb illnesses like dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

The EPA is reviewing the experimental use permit, with the public comment period ending June 5.
