Coinbase Contributes x402 Protocol to New x402 Foundation under Linux Foundation

Coinbase has contributed its x402 protocol to a new x402 Foundation hosted by the Linux Foundation.

x402 repurposes the HTTP 402 status to let servers request payments and accept proof of payment inline with HTTP.

Clients typically settle instantly via stablecoins like USDC on low-fee networks such as Base, enabling sub-cent micropayments.

The protocol is open, chain-agnostic in principle, and targeted at AI agents that need real-time autonomous payments.
