Underground acoustic signals expose hidden tunnels beneath US roads and railways

Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers tested a new way to detect hidden tunnels using acoustics.

They placed an acoustic source below a buried steel tunnel and measured surface vibrations with geophones.

The tunnel produced a distinctive subharmonic signal that appeared only when the tunnel was present.
