An investigation found Gibraltar still lacks a wastewater treatment plant after decades of failed projects.

Raw sewage continues to be discharged into the sea, affecting the ecologically sensitive Bay of Algeciras and Strait of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar is under growing pressure to align with EU environmental rules, including Directive 91/271/EEC, through the UK-EU framework.

The issue could become more urgent as new environmental obligations approach and previous financing efforts, including from the EIB, have not delivered.
