Scientists Discover Signs Africa May Be Splitting Apart Beneath Zambia

Scientists found mantle-like helium in hot springs and wells near Zambia’s Kafue Rift, pointing to deep fault activity beneath the surface.

The gas patterns, especially helium isotopes and carbon dioxide, suggest an early-stage continental rift may be forming in southwestern Africa.

Researchers say the region could be part of a larger tectonic system linked to Africa’s slow split, similar to the East African Rift.

The discovery also raises the possibility of future geothermal energy and gas resources in the area.
