Basalt-powered cement process could slash energy use and CO2 emissions by 80%

Researchers proposed making Portland cement from calcium-rich silicate rocks like basalt instead of limestone.

The approach could use under 60% of the energy and cut related CO2 emissions by more than 80%.

They also argue basalt and similar volcanic rocks are abundant enough to meet long-term demand.

If scaled, the idea could help decarbonize one of the world’s most emissions-heavy industries.
