Safran’s new open-fan aircraft engine moves closer to real flight testing by 2029

Safran and partners have launched the EU-funded TAKE OFF project to mature CFM’s open-fan engine technology.

Ground tests are planned for 2027, integrated testing for 2028, and flight tests on an Airbus A380 in 2029.

The effort builds on recent component and wind-tunnel progress from the CFM RISE program.

If successful, the design could cut fuel burn and emissions by about 20% and support aviation decarbonization goals.
