A major study found 17.5 million people along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts face very high flood risk, with another 17 million at high risk.

Researchers combined geographic, infrastructure, demographic, and historical damage data with AI tools to map flood exposure.

Major coastal population centers such as New York City, New Orleans, Houston, Miami, and Norfolk are among the most exposed.

The study warns that climate change is likely to worsen flood danger through stronger storms and heavier rainfall.
