Starlink has been ruining astronomers' nights for years. Now it turns out its launches are leaving a mark on the climate

A study warns that the rapid growth of Starlink and other satellite megaconstellations could sharply increase space-related air pollution.

Researchers estimate that by 2029 space activity may account for nearly 40% of the sector's atmospheric pollution, including about 870 tons of soot a year.

Satellite launches and reentries can release black carbon and aluminum oxides into the upper atmosphere, with possible effects on warming, clouds, and ozone.

The concern grows as more than 15,000 satellites are already in orbit, most of them operated by SpaceX.
