Bamboos to Beat Desertification: China Turns Fast-Growing Grass into Green Sand Barriers

China is testing woven bamboo sand barriers and rainwater-collecting trays to fight shifting sands in desert regions.

The Chinese Academy of Forestry says bamboo could replace straw grids and plastic barriers with a longer-lasting, lower-cost option.

Field trials in Qinghai and Inner Mongolia have shown promising results, with the approach designed to be biodegradable and reduce waste.

If scaled up, the bamboo system could cut maintenance costs and plastic pollution across major desertification zones, including the Three-North Shelterbelt Program area.
