A Majority of European Lawmakers Voted Against Letting Big Tech Read Our Messages. They’re Going to Anyway

The European Parliament failed to block a rule letting tech companies voluntarily scan some private messages for child abuse material.

The measure keeps a legal basis in place until 2028 or until a replacement law is adopted.

It does not cover end-to-end encrypted services such as WhatsApp and Signal.

The vote reignites a debate over child safety enforcement versus private communication privacy.
