UK and Israeli researchers solved a 50-year mystery behind the rare AnWj blood group.

They linked the AnWj antigen to deletions in the MAL gene, confirming a new MAL blood group system.

The finding was validated in the lab and published in Blood journal.

New genetic tests could now identify rare blood types earlier and help prevent dangerous transfusion reactions.
