A group of astronauts without medical training has taken the world’s first X-ray in orbit: it’s a huge breakthrough

Four SpaceX Fram2 crew members with no medical training took the first diagnostic X-rays of their own bodies in orbit.

After brief training, they used a portable commercial X-ray device; independent radiologists said the images were good enough for diagnosis.

The result suggests crews on long missions could quickly check for fractures or internal injuries without waiting for Earth support.

Portable X-ray imaging could improve medical autonomy on future Moon and Mars flights and reduce reliance on ultrasound.
