Scientists Unravel the Mystery of Angola’s Giant “Ghost Elephants”

DNA from dung and motion-camera photos confirmed Angola’s elusive highland “ghost elephants” are a distinct lineage.

Genomic analysis found they are most closely related to elephants in neighboring Namibia, not to known sampled populations.

The study reveals a previously unsequenced elephant lineage and highlights the value of noninvasive DNA for conservation.
