Chinese scientists unveil glowing Avatar-like plants that could light cities without electricity

Chinese researchers have created more than 20 plant species that glow in the dark by adding light-producing genes from fireflies and luminous fungi.

They publicly demonstrated the plants at the Zhongguancun Forum, including orchids, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums.

The technology could one day provide low-carbon nighttime lighting for parks and city spaces without electricity.

It may also find uses in tourism, urban design, and broader biotech research.
