JAL and JR East to Launch Two-Region Living Trial in Tohoku, Plane Return Visits Effectively Free

JAL and JR East will run a two-region living trial in six Tohoku municipalities from June 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027.

Participants must meet minimum visits, stay overnight, and use the Tohoku Shinkansen and JAL flights the same number of times.

Round-trip Shinkansen users receive miles equal to eligible JAL routes to use for a future award ticket.

Applications are open April 13–26 with 5 or 10 participants per municipality.

The program is run by a nine-organization consortium and was selected for a national pilot project.
