U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration retires weather forecasting supercomputer and moves to Google Cloud

NOAA will move its main high-performance computing platform for weather forecasting to Google Cloud.

The agency plans a phased shift away from its HPE Cray supercomputers to public cloud, with core forecast systems set to migrate by December 2027.

The change should let NOAA scale computing resources up or down as needed, speeding model updates and the rollout of new technologies.

NOAA is also advancing AI forecasting models, marking a major shift in how U.S. national weather prediction is run.
