Super Mario Galaxy Movie has a better opening day than the first film, is expected to finish behind for the weekend

Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened to $34 million on its first Wednesday, surpassing the first film's $31.7 million start.

Universal estimates the film will make $128.2 million over three days and $186 million over five days, both below the first film's totals.

If the film tops $100 million domestically by Friday it will join three other animated franchises with two films over $100 million in their opening three days.

Rotten Tomatoes shows a 42% critics score and a 91% audience score, indicating stronger audience than critic reception.
