MIT President describes a critical situation in fundraising and talent development, saying, "Frankly, this is a loss for the nation"

MIT’s president warned that cuts to federal research funding and higher taxes on university endowments are squeezing the school’s research budget.

The funding shortfall is already reducing hiring and limiting graduate student enrollment across programs like MIT-IBM Computing, EECS MEng, and MIT Sloan.

She said the impact reaches beyond MIT, threatening U.S. basic research and the pipeline of future science and technology talent.

MIT plans to diversify its funding sources to offset the pressure and sustain research and training capacity.
