The USB specification includes e-marker data that reports cable protocols, speeds, and voltages.

There is no standard for USB controllers to expose that e-marker data to operating systems.

If OSes could read e-marker data they could notify users when a cable limits speed or power.

Apple could implement such notifications but does not currently provide them, leaving users confused.
