US scientists unlock critical molten salt reactor data for future nuclear energy

ORNL scientists developed new methods to measure thermal conductivity and viscosity in uranium-bearing molten salts under reactor-like conditions.

The rare data will help improve molten salt reactor design, modeling, optimization, and safety analysis.

The measurements also fill key gaps that have slowed licensing and regulatory review of this advanced nuclear technology.

The results will expand the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database and support broader U.S. research efforts.
