A study of 58 older adults in Portuguese care homes found handwriting differences linked to cognitive impairment.

Participants with cognitive decline wrote more slowly and with smaller, more fragmented strokes, especially in dictation tasks.

The results suggest handwriting-based tests could help detect cognitive problems earlier and monitor them outside clinics.

Such screening may offer a low-cost, accessible tool for care homes and other nonclinical settings.
