Nation's Public Safety Chief cautious on mandatory treatment and GPS for stalkers after 'Poké Center' stabbing

Public Safety Commissioner Jiro Akama said on April 2 he is cautious about making counseling or treatment for stalkers mandatory.

A suspect in the March 26 Sunshine City 'Pokémon' shop stabbing had refused counseling after receiving a prohibition order in January.

Of 3,037 prohibition orders issued last year, only 233 led to treatment.

A system allowing courts to order GPS attachment on bail if flight risk is found is set to take effect by 2028, and the government is considering GPS rules for parolees; Akama said he will study the issue.
