Can my favorite Game Boy gadget tell fake cartridges from real?

Epilogue's Retrace app for the GB Operator can connect to Android and iOS phones to identify and price Game Boy cartridges.

In tests of about 50 cartridges the app often identified games correctly but sometimes labeled fakes as authentic and vice versa.

Around 10% of cartridges needed multiple scans and one known legit cartridge failed to scan.

Analogue plans to release an SN Operator Super Nintendo reader next month that will also work with the app.
