Alone in the Dark’s creator is crowdfunding a new Mega Drive / Genesis game with a unique controller

Frédérick Raynal, director of the original 1992 Alone in the Dark, is crowdfunding a new Sega Mega Drive/Genesis game called PopCorn: Duel, a remake of his 1988 PC title PopCorn.

PopCorn is a Breakout-style brick‑breaker; Raynal is adapting it for Mega Drive using didactic, progressive code that implements paddle, ball, bonuses, and monsters.

The PopCorn: Duel Kickstarter is roughly halfway to its funding goal and the project will include a PopCorn Spinner controller if funded.

Raynal built a spinner prototype and says Mega Drive has never had a controller of this type; existing arcade cabinet spinners are expensive and bulky.

David Mekersa of GameCodeur.fr, who proposed a C/SGDK Mega Drive programming course and was involved in the project, fell ill and passed away during the adaptation.
