Apple may replace the main camera with a more expensive module in the iPhone 18 Pro in 2026

Apple is expected to switch the iPhone 18 Pro main camera to a new variable-aperture module in the second half of 2026, replacing the current fixed-aperture design.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the new module will cost about 50% more on average than today’s 7P lens module.

Sunny Optical is reportedly set to supply 40% to 50% of the new modules, while Largan is also expected to remain a key supplier.

The change could add pressure to Apple’s margins, which are already being squeezed by rising memory costs.

Kuo also predicts a future shift in 2028 iPhone ultra-wide cameras from flip-chip to chip-on-board packaging, potentially favoring Sunny Optical further.
