NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories develop technology that curves image sensors to reduce edge blur in wide-angle shooting

NHK's Science & Technology Research Laboratories unveiled a curved image sensor for wide-angle shooting, bending an ultra-thin silicon sensor into a concave shape.

The team confirmed that the approach can reduce edge blur and color distortion, improving image quality around the frame's periphery.

By using thinning and transfer processes, they achieved a sensor with a 15 mm radius of curvature.

The goal is to simplify lens design while enabling smaller, higher-quality wide-field cameras, with practical use eyed around 2030.
