NCC President Yang Han-gwang: “Now is the golden time for Korea to lead the world by combining cancer data and AI”

National Cancer Center chief Yang Han-gwang outlined plans to build an AI-ready cancer dataset and a cancer-specific AI foundation model by combining registry, treatment, survival, genomic, imaging, and pathology data.

The goal is to collect multimodal data from 10,000 people by 2028 and upgrade the national AI and cancer data centers.

Linking nationwide cancer data with AI could enable precision medicine, treatment selection, prognosis prediction, and drug candidate discovery.

Built on K-CURE, CURE-NGS, and federated learning, the effort could also strengthen regional care capacity and Korea’s medical AI competitiveness.
