Families of Tumbler Ridge Shooting Victims Sue OpenAI

Families of victims and a survivor filed six federal lawsuits against OpenAI in San Francisco over a deadly school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

The complaints allege ChatGPT flagged the suspect’s gun-violence planning months before the attack, but OpenAI only disabled the account and did not alert authorities.

The person allegedly returned using a new account and later carried out the shooting, according to the lawsuits.

The cases could help determine whether AI companies can be held liable for missing or failing to act on warnings of violent intent in chatbot chats.
