A Common Diabetes Drug Is Linked With 'Exceptional Longevity' in Women

A 2025 US cohort study of 438 postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes linked starting metformin to about a 30% lower risk of reaching age 90 or dying before then than starting sulfonylurea.

The finding hints at possible longevity benefits for metformin and adds to geroscience interest in the drug.

However, the study was observational, so it cannot prove metformin extends human lifespan.
